A cruise liner went out of business last September while passengers were mid cruise and so these people were left in Canada and the Bahamas when ships were seized. When a cruise liner goes belly up, not only are passengers out of luck they are also out of money. Passengers who got insurance from a third party ended up filing claims amounting to more than a million dollars when this incident happened.

Passengers who bought insurance directly from the cruise liner wait in line with creditors waiting for payment that may possibly not happen. This is not an everyday thing but mishaps are inevitable when people travel and there are other things like illness or missing flights that can change travel plans. Money placed in travel arrangements can be lost just like that especially when trips do not push through even if the traveler is not the one at fault.

This is primarily the reason why travel insurance can be obtained to cover accidents, sickness, flights, and money when trips do not go as planned. The mix will include services for lost bags and medical evacuation too. People can choose from different coverage types when they get travel insurance for certain trips.

Travel companies sell travel insurance but these policies can also be availed of from other sources like tour operators and travel agencies. Services differ based on the policy source. Policies can be extended to cover supplier default when these are issued by the third parties.

Cruise liners as with other travel companies will not willingly include coverage like this in a policy. Make sure you buy your travel insurance from a third party not from a cruise line or tour operator. A person can incur costs that can skyrocket when he or she is involved in a travel mishap regardless of how extreme the situation may be like being involved in cases with natural disasters or how mundane like a simple flight delay.

It is not unusual for claims to be filed for trip cancellations. Something more important may lead to a person cancelling a trip. You get ill, there's an accident, something happens to a family member or there's a bad weather situation.

Another popular claim regularly filed by travelers is the trip interruption claim which can be caused by numerous factors. Claims are not made on a regular basis but there are some who file claims for medical evacuation especially since this service costs a lot. Twenty to two hundred thousand dollars is the price to pay for this service depending on how serious one's needs are.

Medical evacuation does not always pertain to airlifts and the like there are times when people are given airline seats and a medical escort. With medical coverage a person can gain more than medical evacuation insurance. One official of a large insurance company says that younger people are buying it because they realize that accidents can befall them.

This is popular among travelers who have children with them just in case there is a need for medication or a physician during a trip. Without a 24 hour international hotline travel insurance policies are not as useful. Is this coverage even necessary?

Primary consumers for this policy are those who may have medical problems that need constant attention. If traveling on a trip requires certain down payments or deposits then insurance can provide utmost protection. A person will buy insurance if it can protect his or her money.

The cruise liner will pay a total of a million dollars in settlements but they say that only ten percent of travelers have travel insurance. Numbers have not gone up even if re-ticketing can cost a lot. To be rid of worries one should get insurance.

But what will that peace of mind cost? Premiums are based on the total cost of the vacation at a rate of about 4 to 8 percent. Travel insurance is not cheap but it can make all the difference should mishaps happen.
